Head coach Nigel Adkins has spoken of his delight at the fighting spirit shown by the Hull City players in the midweek draw against Barnsley.
Hosting Jose Morais’ new side at the KCOM Stadium for Tuesday night’s action, the visitors took the lead in the game in the first half through Oliver McBurnie but Hull battled to greater possession and chances on the day and got their reward late on as Craig Dawson found the net to take a point.
Speaking to the Official Site as he met with the media following the game, Adkins was disappointed to not take all three points on the day but he couldn’t have been more pleased with the attitude and determination of the side and he was confident moving forward if that performance could be replicated.
‘We wanted all three points and I felt we could have got all three points, but we`ll respect the point that we got and it`s an important one. We didn`t reach the heights that we did against Sheffield United last Friday, particularly in the first half.’
Adkins went on to say.
‘I was disappointed with the goal that we gave away, it was a poor goal from our point of view and it gave Barnsley something to hang onto. They defended with ten men on the edge of their box. 17 attempts at goal wasn`t good enough, although it was a great equaliser from our captain Michael Dawson.’
Praising the resilience of the side, Adkins has been in the game long enough to know matches like that can often go against you, so fighting back for a point did leave him pleased.
‘Sometimes you lose games like that, so I`m pleased that the equaliser came and like I said, we`ll respect the point that we`ve got but I did think that there was an opportunity for us to get all three. We finished the game strongly, we were on the front foot, we played with wingers and we tried to move the ball about. We weren`t at the level that I wanted in the first half, but it`s another game undefeated at home and that`s eight now since I took over. We`ll move on now and get ready for our next game.”
With Jon Toral being substituted following a clash with Adam Jackson, Adkins confirmed he had suffered a jaw injury but he didn’t elaborate at that stage as to possible severity.
