Hull City were plunged back into the relegation zone after suffering an embarrassing home defeat against mid-table Ipswich Town. Hull City wasted their game in hand, instead choosing to move into the relegation zone rather than climb away from it.
Phil Brown made changes after the defeat at Coventry, and ultimately, one of these would prove costly. The decision to start Danny Coles in the centre was surprising, especially after Michael Turner had played well in recent weeks. Four mistakes and sixty minutes later, Coles was hauled off to a chorus of boo’s.
The game started brightly as City attacked their visitors. Stuart Elliott and Dean Marney both went close as Ipswich were slow to start. A Dean Marney effort hit the top of the bar after he manoeuvred himself to allow a shooting opportunity. Nicky Forster looked lively whilst Dean Windass was having another fine game.
A neat move down the right wing brought the first goal. Parlour’s cross found Stuart Elliott at the far post and although his header appeared to pose little threat, the dipping effort hit the bar before Dean Windass prodded in the rebound from close range for this third goal since re-joining the Tigers.
City were pegged back almost immediately by the on-loan Blackburn Rovers striker Francis Jeffers. A mistake by Damien Delaney allowed Jeffers to get in behind the City defender and although the Ipswich striker did his best to let the opportunity pass him by, he was able to keep his composure and slot the ball past Myhill under pressure.
City had gifted their opposition an equaliser and this was to set the tone for the rest of the night. Danny Coles gave away possession on the edge of the box and after Jeffers fed Lee who passed to Peters his shot deflected off Ricketts and up and over the despairing dive of Myhill for an undeserved lead to the visitors.
Coles’ nightmare didn’t end there. Coles allowed Lee to out muscle him before slotting the ball past Myhill. Despite Coles’ efforts at tracking back, the City defender couldn’t risk a red card. Four minutes into the second half and City now had a mountain to climb.
Coles then made his next mistake as he headed a free-kick straight into the path of Jason De Vos who powered the ball in from three yards. Coles was immediately substituted although the chorus of boo’s that some sections of the crowd sent his way were uncalled for.
The fourth goal sparked a mass exodus of City fans and many on their way out would have heard Ipswich score a fifth. Substitute Danny Haynes had the pace to ease past Delaney and finish past a helpless Bo Myhill.
City were given the opportunity to score a late consolation from the penalty spot after John Welsh had been fouled. Dean Windass stepped up to send the goalkeeper the wrong way and score his second of the night and second two goal haul in consecutive home games.
Ipswich continued to create chances but former City striker Jon Walters and Danny Haynes both failed to convert chances. City were plunged back into relegation trouble thanks to their now inferior goal difference compared to QPR.

The ratings are almost not needed or worthwhile for this performance. We know who played well and that was Dean Windass, with mentions also going to Nicky Forster and Sam Ricketts.
We know who played badly, mainly being Danny Coles, but the entire team must take responsibility for the performance. Ultimately, it was Phil Brown’s tactical decisions that cost us the game. Can we hope for an improvement on Saturday?
