David Meyler and Jarrod Bowen have both been reflecting on the heavy defeat of Birmingham City at the weekend.
Hull City ended their run of poor form with an emphatic six one victory over Birmingham last weekend and we go into the international break with a great boost in confidence.
Speaking to the Official Site as he met with the media this week, Mayler said that Hull simply had to maintain that standard as we looked to turn our season around.
‘In our previous home games against Sunderland and Preston, we only played for 45 minutes, but on Saturday we played well for the majority of the game. From the first minute until something like the 88th-minute, we were brilliant – we wiped the floor with them. Going forward, that`s the manner and level of performance we need to be producing week in, week out – home and away.’
Meyler knew our problem lately had been consistency but with a victory like that, we have proven what we can do.
‘We haven`t been consistent enough recently and that`s on us. The players have to take responsibility for that because we haven`t been as good as we should have been at times during games. If I look at myself, I`ve not probably hit the standards that I should be, other players haven`t as well, but we reached a very good standard against Birmingham and now we need to maintain that standard going forward.’
He went on to say.
‘We spoke about it as a group after the Preston game and everyone agreed that we weren`t starting games well enough. But the tempo we set right from the off against Birmingham was fantastic in all areas of the pitch. Overall, it was a fantastic team performance. To put six past Birmingham and produce a performance like that is encouraging but we won`t get carried away – it`s just one game. We`ve got the time off now with the international break but when we get back we`ve got Norwich, Barnsley and Forest. All three are important games and we`ve got to look to build on Saturday`s result and put together a winning run.’
With Bowen grabbing his seventh goal of the season so far in the game, the 20 year old takes his place as the Championship’s joint top scorer so far this campaign and having signed a new and improved deal earlier in the week, he knew the game was the perfect way to top that off.
‘Obviously I was over the moon to get on the scoresheet and help the team pick up what was three vital points on Saturday, especially after the week I`ve had. I want to score as many goals as I possibly can, so to get two in a week – and sign a new contract with the Club – it was a pretty decent seven days for me personally.’
He went on to say.
‘The team is more important though and I was just happy to see us get back to winning ways. Saturday was all about bouncing back after our previous results and performances and I don`t think anyone can complain at beating Birmingham in the manner we did. It was a great team performance from the lads and it was great to pick up all three points for the manager as well.’
With the game bringing an end to a five match winless run, Bowen went on to say.
‘We`ve played well in patches or for 45-minute periods in games this season, but 45 minutes isn`t enough – football is a 90-minute game. We were on the front foot right from the off on Saturday and got our rewards with a couple of early goals. From that point on, we never looked back. We dominated the entire game, apart from a ten-minute period at the start of the second half, and were really clinical in front of goal to score three goals in each half. It`s not often you see 6-1 results in football, but this one was very much well deserved in my opinion after the way we played from start to finish.’
