Vital Hull understands that Mikel Alonso was due to play in yesterday’s reserve game with Grimsby Town at Blundell Park yesterday.

Phil Brown had linked up with his former Bolton colleague Alonso, the brother of Liverpool star Xabi, but for reasons unknown, the midfielder did not feature for the Hull side that lost 3-1 to a Grimsby reserve side.

Alonso would have added a exotic flavour to the City midfield but whether the Spaniard would have helped Phil Brown’s promotion cause was unknown. Having failed to make any noticeable impact at the Reebok Stadium, Alonso will return to Real Sociedad to continue his career in the Spanish La Liga at the end of the season.

After Alonso did not feature, rumours have started to circulate suggesting that the midfielder will remain at Bolton and that Phil Brown has cooled his interest in the midfielder.

Whilst Alonso failed to show, Hull have also ended their interest in trialist John Curtis, with the formmer Manchester United and Queens Park Rangers defender released after his trial at the KC Stadium.
