Phelan – More Purpose To Our Play

With five straight Premier League defeats and head coach Mike Phelan’s honeymoon period well and truly over, the gaffer knows Hull City need a greater purpose to their play following defeat to Stoke City this weekend.

Losing the game at the KCOM Stadium two nil to a Xherdan Shaqiri brace, it was another poor performance with the return of Michael Dawson from injury being one bright spark, and Phelan knew, as he spoke to the Official Site in his post game press conference, that not only did the players have to give more on the pitch across 90 minutes to turn this around – they also had to have a purpose in what they were trying to do.

‘We need to do more and we know that. We`re not here to just lay down and let sides beat us, we have to learn and we have to learn quickly. We`re on the end of a few defeats now and we need to try and get some sort of purpose into our play and find the work ethic that we had in the opening games of the season. It`s a confidence thing – we need to regroup, rebuild and go again.’

Reflecting on the game itself and the performance, he went on to say.

‘This game was extremely disappointing. We didn`t pass the ball well enough, and we didn`t look to get on the ball well enough. There were probably a few nerves there because of previous results. We got done by a quality first goal, it was an exceptional goal. The second goal was a real disappointment – we had four or five opportunities to clear the ball, we didn`t, they got a free kick and a quality player put it away. It`s annoying and disappointing but we have to look forward.’

Bristol City up next in the League Cup could be some respite and a chance to renew some confidence, but Watford next in the Premier League at the end of the month isn’t going to be a cake walk either if we remain as easy to get through as we currently are.
