A much changed Hull City took on lowly Preston at Deepdale this afternoon. With Odubajo out with a calf strain Elmo dropped to right full back. The remaining back four remained the same: Maguire, Davies and Robertson.

The midfield showed Snodgrass starting for City since the opening day of last season. The midfield was completed with Livermore, Meyler and Maloney. Akpom was given another chance and was partnered up front by Clucas. Clucas is a worker but is he a striker?

City were not in the game in the first 30 mins and we’re lucky not to be 5-0 on the half hour. Garner had 3 opportunities to open the scoring but fortunately spurned them all.

They were literally hanging on by their fingertips and had very little to offer in attack. Meyler and Maloney kept making errors which only made matters worse.

H T Preston 0-0 Hull City.

City made a change at half time bringing on Huddlestone in place of the ineffective Meyler although in truth any one of 8 or 9 could have been taken off. Huddlestone began well and almost immediately had City’s first shot on target (is he on his way to Leicester?)

Just on the hour Curtis Davies clipped a Preston players heels and was rightly booked. Hernandez came on and replaced Akpom who this time accepted the manager’s decision without any further petulant outburst.

Huddlestone then received a booking and a minute later Preston scored from a free kick. An excellent shot from Gallagher undid the City defence after 62 minutes. Jake Livermore then received a booking before Maloney came off to be replaced by Diame.

10 minutes from time only a header off the line by Maguire spared McGregor’s blushes following a weak punch out.

Four minutes of injury time including two Preston substitutions produced only one point of drama and City succumbed to another defeat to a lowly Championship side. In the final minute a shot by Snodgrass appeared to have claimed an equaliser but it was apparently cleared off the line. Dismal and terribly disappointing.
