Relegation Rivals Both Lose

Last night, Luton Town and Leeds United were both in Championship action.

Leeds United travelled to Birmingham City, the team that the Tigers had demolished two nil on Saturday. The win had moved City out of the drop zone and four points clear of their Yorkshire rivals, but last nights game provided Leeds with the opportunity to close the gap.

A fifteenth minute Nicklas Bendtner goal was enough to see off the bottom club in the Championship as they followed up their away defeat at Wolves on Saturday with another defeat last night. Birmingham’s victory moved them top whilst Leeds remain four points adrift from safety having played a game more than Hull City and QPR.

Elsewhere, Luton Town lost at home to Norwich City thanks to a ninetieth minute winner from S. Lappin. Luton had been ahead in the match twice only to see Norwich equalise on both occasions before Lappin struck in stoppage times to take all the points for the Canaries.

Norwich were slowly becoming part of the relegation battle but last nights win moved them six points clear of the drop. Luton remain one point ahead of the Tigers having played one game more.

Monday night had seen Barnsley win at Stoke City, moving the Yorkshire club away from the drop zone. Fortunately, last nights results were more favourable for the Tigers as Saturday’s game took on an even greater significance. A victory over relegation rivals Coventry City will set up Tuesday night’s game against Ipswich Town as the perfect opportunity to increase the gap between the Tigers and the drop zone as City play their game in hand over their relegation rivals.
