Hull City recorded a 2-1 win away at Bristol City, moving them back into the Championship top six whilst recording only the second ever win at Ashton Gate.
The last time City won at Ashton Gate was in 1965, meaning a new generation of City supporters were able to see The Tigers claim three points at Bristol City for the first time. Bruce, who was looking for a response following defeat at Middlesbrough made five changes with Evans, Aluko and Simpson brought back into the side. Slovenian Robert Koren was an unexpected inclusion while Alex Bruce also returned as City reverted to a 3-5-2 formation, Liam Rosenior fulfilling the left-wing back role.
For a side which has an appauling history at Saturday`s opponents, City started brightly in the evening kick-off in front of the Sky cameras. Within the first ten minutes, City had twice gone close before a breathtaking opener. Koren and Quinn interacted before the latter found Simpson. He passed to Aluko, back to Simpson, back to Aluko as City carved their way through the Bristol defence before the former Rangers striker finished across Tom Heaton.
It was a deserved lead and one which should have been added to as Elmohamady crossed, only for Rosenior to head over when well positioned with a diving effort. As City spurned chances to move further ahead, the home side scored with their first effort. Pearson, on City`s byline pulled the goal back for the on-rushing Davies who shot into the ground and into Amos` net.
The remained of the half saw few chances, but City would start the second brighter, a long range effort from Robert Koren hitting the crossbar after a turn from twenty-five yards. At the other end, Davies could not reach a Taylor cross whilst Amos deflected a driven Stead effort onto the post. As City tried to reply, Evans saw an effort deflected wide before City scored the decisive goal. Aluko, who terrorised the City defence all game found space to shoot but was denied by Heaton. Rosenior retrieved the loose ball and found Quinn. The midfielder`s tame shot was on target but Skuse deflected the ball with the use of his arm and chest past Heaton and into his own net.
City had chances to extend their advantage but Aluko shot wide with Elmohamady well positioned before Aluko became creator for Kay Simpson. The former Arsenal striker beat the offside trap but took his shot quickly and placed it wide of the far post.
As City missed opportunities, Bristol City searched for an equaliser and almost earned an undeserved point. With Amos caught out of position, a header from a Bristol City corner struck the top of the crossbar and came back into the arms of Amos, City relieved to see the woodwork come to their assistance again.
Bruce bemoaned his side`s lack of finishing which would have made the victory more comfortable, but the three points ensured City returned to winning ways ahead of back to back home fixtures, as well as moving City back up to 6th.
