Head coach Marco Silva has been giving his thoughts on the disappointing heavy defeat to Everton on Saturday.
Travelling to Goodison Park for the game, Silva knew he had to be disappointed with how the game had gone as despite going a goal down early on he knew we were frustrating Everton up until the point Tom Huddlestone saw red and in the final 12 minutes of the match, the hosts scored a further three times to secure the points.
Speaking to the Official Site as he met with the media for his post game press conference, Silva explained that he felt the final scoreline was very harsh on the team given their efforts on the day.
‘It`s disappointing. I saw one game for 70 minutes, and after I saw another game (red card). We didn`t deserve that decision and we didn`t deserve what happened after it. Up to that point we were competing and we played as a team. We had some problems in the first half, but we caused problems for Everton as well.’
Silva went on to say.
‘Everton scored in the first half and we had a very good chance to score as well. We started the second half very well and had 25 good minutes with the quality to push Everton back. We made a change to our system but then after we had done that, one decision which I didn`t understand, changed the game. Our team, our players and Tom didn`t deserve this.’
Clearly the sending off of midfielder Huddlestone had irked him as he continued.
‘We lose a player for three games because of this and I don`t know why. It`s not a situation I want to talk about too much in this moment. We played against a very good team on Saturday who have been doing very well recently and I`m not sure there have been many teams that have caused them the problems we did for 70 minutes. We went there to compete and for 70 minutes this is true and we came close to a result. After that, the game changed.’
Sky Sports also have him saying about the red card decision.
‘What I saw five minutes before was Lukaku fouled our player and not even receive a yellow card. This is what I saw. These decisions, the referee has a moment to decide, the same as I sometimes do on the side. But I think it is a yellow card.’
Silva added a decision hadn’t yet been made on whether or not the red card would be appealed.
‘Maybe it will cause big problems for us in the coming games. We will need to decide what to do. But in this moment I don’t want to talk more about this situation.’
