Tottenham again have the chance to lay down a marker to Chelsea, playing host to Bournemouth in the lunchtime kick off on Saturday. A Spurs win, making it seven in a row, would close the gap to Chelsea – in action against Manchester United, on Sunday. The Cherries – being beaten just the once in the last six, last time out – head to White Hart Lane with work to do as they’re only seven clear of trouble.
A stunning 3-0 win over Arsenal moved Crystal Palace six points clear of Swansea, 18th. This was a fifth victory in the last six for in-form Palace. Leicester, they too have been beaten just once in six – last time out, have eyes on a top 10 finish. These chances would be boosted with a win at Selhurst Park.
Everton have played more games than rivals for a Europa League spot, Manchester United and Arsenal, but victory over Burnley could take the Toffees as high as fifth come the end of the weekend? The Clarets – unbeaten in two, six points clear of danger – are looking good for a second season of Premier League football but STILL chase that illusive away win… could it come at Goodison Park?
Stoke are dropping a little too close to the bottom four – eight points from danger, having lost the last four in a four game winless run. This is a big game for both the Potters and visiting Hull, 17th, who have won three of the last four to sit two points above the relegation zone.
Bottom of the league, one win in 10 games, 10 points from safety and just seven, including this, games to play – Sunderland look destined for the Championship…. Even a victory over West Ham – who ended a five game losing run last time out – at the Stadium of Light probably isn’t going to be enough to help save the Black Cats?
Watford, heavily beaten at Tottenham a week ago, should be safe from the threat of relegation. However, another against relegation threatened Swansea and the Hornets could have fresh concerns – the Swans could well move out of the bottom three too, depending on Hull’s result.
It looks good for a top 10 finish for Southampton but the Saints – having beaten West Brom a week ago – will look to further close the four points between themselves and the Baggies, 9th. Manchester City, 4th, go to St Mary’s four points clear of the challengers in this evening kicking aiming for a victory that would at least maintain a strong position to finish in a Champions League qualification spot.
The aforementioned West Brom will look to react to Southampton’s result to restore their advantage over Southampton, if not extend it, when top-four challengers Liverpool, 3rd, head to the Hawthorns on Sunday.
Manchester United’s long unbeaten run will come under threat from champions-elect Chelsea as Jose Mourinho’s former side head to Old Trafford. Victory for United and they remain in the chase for a top-four finish, a Blues win and they’re within touching distance of a fifth Premier League title.
The gap between Middlesbrough and safety will stand at six points, at least, by the time second-bottom Boro play host to Arsenal on Easter Monday. The Gunners’ top-four hopes took another nosedive when they were heavily beaten at Crystal Palace – leaving them seven points off a Champions League spot, which might have been extended to 11 when Arsene Wenger’s sixth-placed side go to the Riverside Stadium?
It goes without saying the expectation; most definitely the hope at least, will be for a positive result. But will this happen? We’ll find out soon enough.
