A look back at a recent game with our rivals tomorrow, Plymouth Argyle
The last home meeting between Hull City and Plymouth Argyle came on the 18th of August 2001 in the old third division.
It was our first home game of the season, the tigers having started with a great 3-1 away win at Exeter the previous week. This, though, turned out to be no classic.
Managed at that time by Brian Little, the Tigers team which took to the field in front of 10,755 spectators was: Glennon, Edwards, Whittle, Mohan. Goodison, Whitmore, Johnsson, Greaves, Beresford, Dudfield and Alexander.
It was truly a clash which promised much but delivered very little. Such was the lack of any goalmouth action, both keepers had a very quiet game. Amazingly, in the full 90 minutes, both sides only mustered one shot on goal between them! Plymouth seemingly came for a point and got it in one of the all time 0-0 bore draws to be witnessed at Boothferry Park.
Plymouth, managed by Paul Sturrock, threw five players across midfield and fielded just one striker. City were solid at the back but when it came to attack, just could not deliver. City were missing Ryan Williams on the right and played with Theodore Whitmore in that position but he tended to drift infield and just became lost amongst the rest of the bodies already in the centre of the park. Gary Alexander & Laurie Dudfield, the most expensive strike force in City’s history up to that time rarely broke past Plymouth centre backs, Coughlan & Wotton. Alexander did have the best three chances of the game, shooting over the bar after 30 seconds, in the 67th minute when hitting the side netting after a Dudfield effort had hit the keeper’s legs and a few minutes later when he headed wide. Whitmore was taken off and Rob Matthews came on but nothing improved. Rodney Rowe was given a run out for the final four minutes in place of Dudfield.
The crowd did their best to lift the team but as the minutes passed, patience ticked away as well and some boos were to be heard at the final
