City against…

Over the years City have played over 100 different league clubs in their history, some no longer exist. This is City’s records against some of them! (A-G)

(NB these results also include all wartime leagues, War Cups, etc.)

Aldershot
Surprisingly, or not as the case may be, City only played Aldershot 4 times, during the 81/82 and 82/83 seasons, when both teams were in the basement division. In those four games, City never failed to score.

Played 4; Won 2; Drawn 1; Lost 1; GF 8 GA 5.

Best result
12/03/1982 Aldershot 0 HCFC 3

Barrow
One team City rarely had any trouble with throughout the inter-war period, in fact they never lost to them at either the old Anlaby Road ground or at BP. They can’t have been that good then could they!

Played 22; Won 14; Drawn 4; Lost 4; GF 40; GA 16.

Best result(s)
12/09/1938 HCFC 4 Barrow 0
Robinson 2, McNeill, Davies(D). Attn: 5,195

06/09/1937 HCFC 4 Barrow 0
McNeill 3, Fryer. Attn: 6,742

Bradford Park Avenue
Technically I suppose the last two words of the name should be in brackets to differentiate between them and Bantams, but I doubt many of the older fans will care too much, cos Bradford PA were a bit of a bogey team over the years for City.

Played 53; Won 18; Drawn 9; Lost 26; GF 79; GA 101.

Best result
12/04/1913 HCFC 5 Bradford Park Avenue 0
Stevens 2, Fenwick 2, McQuillan. Attn: 4,000

Burton United
They are the distant forerunners of the current Burton Albion club, but are in no way related to the current club, which was founded in 1951. However, they never gave City any trouble.

Gainsborough Trinity
Hands up those who knew Gainsborough even had a professional team? For 16 seasons, indeed they did, but they never worried City much (we were a good team in those days!).

Gateshead (also including South Shields)
Rather than have two seperate entries I have combined them.

Bit of a strange one this. South Shields, originally founder members of the Third Division North, found themselves in financial troubles during 1930, so in a move repeated recently by Wimbledon/Milton Keynes Dons, shifted upstream to Gateshead to effectively start afresh. Some sources suggest an existing Gateshead club took them over, lock, stock, and doshless barrel, and taking their league membership as well.

As South Shields: Played 18; Won 7; Drawn 3; Lost 8; GF 17; GA 22.

Best result
17/01/1920 HCFC 3 South Shields 0

Glossop North End
How a tiny Derbyshire town managed to support a professional Football League club is beyond me, but they did for about 17 seasons. They even managed a season in the old division one early in their history, but they were a bit like Sunderland were last year…
