A much changed Hull City side kicked off against Leicester and within a couple of minutes Greg Luer had a chance to score his third goal in this competition. Unfortunately his shot bounced off the heel of a defender and away to safety.
For the rest of the first half City had the upper hand without being able to convert a chance into a goal. Dawson once again stood out in defence and with a few of his trademark raking cross field passes.
Odubajo featured strongly with Robertson showing more defensive qualities.
Early in the second half butterfingers Jakupovic dropped the ball yet again but fortunately the ball was cleared.
Akpom and Hernandez came on with about 20minutes left to try and brighten up a dour second half. Mahrez and Vardy came on for Leicester in the second half to try and get a goal but the game drifted towards 0-0 and extra time. 4 minutes of extra time failed to produce a goal including some great defending by Maguire.
The big talking point in the second half was whether a City header by Maguire crossed the line. There is no goal line technology in the league cup but most people apart from the referee thought the ball had crossed the line.
Five minutes into the first half of extra time Akpom was tripped inside the area for definite penalty, even the Leicester commentary team agreed, but the referee incredibly booked him for diving.
Another City penalty appeal was turned down before the pace of Vardy (was he offside?) created a goal for Mahrez despite a good save by Jakupovic.
As the game drifted towards halftime in extra time a ball from Hayden to Akpom created a chance which was then bundled home by our goal poacher Hernandez.
In the second period of extra time Meyler replaced a tiring Diame. Neither side could find a winner and so the game went to penalties.
Incredibly Jakupovic saved Mahrez’s penalty and then Hernandez scored for City. The next 2 penalties were scored meaning City led 2-1. Leicester scored and then Huddlestone scored making it 3-2 to City. Leicester scored again for 3-3, then Akpom made it 4-3 for City. Vardy had to score and did making it 4-4. Meyler then took the last of the ten and buried it to put City through 5-4.
It was no more than City deserved after the disappointments of the first 90 mins.
