Hull’s European disappointment had to be put out of the minds as we headed to Villa Park on Sunday, sadly it wasn’t put out of the mind enough as we suffered defeat again.

Aston Villa, also knocked out in cup competition losing in the league cup, got off to a good start and never really looked back as Hull struggled to get into the game and ended up losing 2-1.

The home side started very brightly and Fabian Delph would have celebrated his England call-up with a goal had it not been for the bar. Allan McGregor was beaten but not the woodwork with just two-minutes gone.

It wasn’t long before Villa were ahead though as Gabby Agbonlahor (14) turned in the box to fire them ahead a little over 10-minutes later.

Villa were in control and shortly before the break, from a Kieran Richardson pull back, Andreas Weimann (36), scorer against us last season, finished from 10-yards to put them two-up at the break.

Looking to change things Steve Bruce made tactical changes with Robert Brady making the main difference. His freekick delivery to Nikica Jelavic (74) saw him head home, deflected in off defender Aly Cissokho with the dubious goals panel likely to look at this one, to give us late hope.

As time ticked away Villa defended deeper, obvious worries from the sheer volume of goals conceded at home last season weighing on their mind, with Jake Livermore forcing Brad Guzan into a good save.

Even with Villa finishing with 10-men, as Ron Vlaar had to go off injured late on and all three subs had been made, we couldn’t find a way back into the game and went down two-one.
