This weeks featured Hull City player is left-back Andy Dawson

Biography

Andy Dawson moved to Hull City from club rivals Scunthorpe United when his contract expired at the end of the 2003 season. At the time, Andy was regarded as one of the best left-backs of the lower leagues, and has since proved that statement, helping the Tigers to two succesive promotions, and is now a permanent fixture of the Championship team.

Andy had the opportunity to move to Norwich before joining the Tigers, but remained at Scunthorpe on a series of short-term contracts.

Andy is the brother of Tottenham defender Michael Dawson, who has acheived the dream of playing regular football in the Premiership.

The fact Scunthorpe were defeated in the play-offs increased the likelihood of Andy moving away from Glanford Park, and indeed he did.

Andy started with Michael at Nottingham Forest, signing a contract in 1995, but only making one senior appearance – a Worthington Cup game against Leyton orient.

Brian laws, the then Forest manager, allowed Andy to join Scunthorpe on loan in 1998. Despite interest from Preston and Aberdeen, Andy made his move permanent in March 1999 for £70,000. The season ended in success for Andy, with a play-off final victory over Leyton Orient.

In 2001,02 Andy was voted Scunthorpe’s player of the year. Although the team struggled, Andy was a constant performer, and by adding free-kicks into his game, allowed him to get on the scoresheet more often.

Andy made 225 appearances for Scunthorpe, scoring 11 goals.

Andy had a slow start to his Tigers career due to picking up an injury against pre-season opposition Canvey Island. Andy made a steady start to his career, and made himself known with spectacular strikes against Southend United and Kidderminster Harriers.

Andy was a key member of the team, and this was recognised as he was selected in the PFA’s Division 3 team of the year.

Andy passed his 300th appearance in football earlier this season as he moved into the Championship. Andy recently had a contract extension, which will see him remain a City player until June 2007.
