Bo Myhill: the next England keeper?

Over the last couple of seasons, Bo Myhill has been one of the best keepers around the lower leagues, and is clearly following in the long tradition of outstanding City keepers that goes back through the likes of Alan Fettis, Tony Norman, Billy Bly, all the way back to Ed Roughley in the 1905 team. Although Fettis and Norman were recognised by Northern Ireland and Wales respectively during their time at City, could Bo go a step further and get an England call up?

As we know, there are currently few Premiership clubs with England-born keepers, and it’s the Championship where the future England netminders are learning their trade. Could it be that England’s next keeper, after Beverley’s Paul Robinson, might just be making his name there?

Interviewed in The League Paper this last Sunday, Portsmouth’s goalkeeping coach David Coles clearly believes so. He believes that Bo deserves to be talked about in the same breath as the likes of established young England talent as Robert Green of Norwich and Scott Carson of Liverpool.

‘Boaz is an all-round keeper, who has fantastic athleticism and agility around the goal. He’s been around the England youth set-up for a long time and could be the one who could come through and challenge Robert Green and Scott Carson to get into the senior squad.’

In the recent FA Cup game, Bo clearly made a name for himself in an otherwise lacklustre City performance. The only problem with that is that once players get talked about in those terms, the bigger clubs start calling. Thankfully we don’t need to sell, and Bo doesn’t want to go. Could we see, one day, the words ‘Boaz Myhill, Hull City and England’?

boaz has been a major player for city over the last season and a half, if he is to play for england i think he would have to move to the premiership to stand a real chance

I would agree with Wright8 there. Our only hope may be after the World Cup when England have a different manager who may be a bit more willing to try Champinship players. Bo certainly stands up well alongside what I have seen of Green and Carson etc.
Not sure why we have a picture of Matt Duke at the top of this article though.
