The Dazed Review – Sheffield Wednesday at the KC

After the battling performance at Leicester midweek which got us our first win, hopes were high for Sheffield Wednesday and the question was could we carry it on ? and in front of the TV cameras also !! We all know what our record on sky is and now is the ideal time to break this curse that we have ?

The signing of Danny Mills after the Leicester game only added to the optimism in the camp, the squad as a whole was looking a lot stronger throughout than it did even two weeks previously ! He was to start immediately in the centre of defense ?

The game started and it was Sheffield who came out the blocks the liveliest and pushed on for an early goal, Mills stopped a definite breakaway very early and then when defending a corner was adjudged to have handle the ball, watching it live it looked like he had handled it but the replays clearly showed that it was indeed Deon Burton who had handled it, that aside Burton coolly slotted the pen away and Myhill, although going the right way, could not keep it out ?

This seemed to galvanize the players as we started playing with conviction, we forced corners although our delivery was not the best and Parkin went close with a long range effort, we then got our breakthrough as Fagan launched a ball into the box and Parkin got on the end of it and headed nicely into the bottom corner for the equalizer, this gave us momentum as we dominated from there, a few minutes later Fagan controlled for Dawson to volley a ball across to Parkin who unleashed a wonderful volley that the keeper had no chance, we were ahead and only 15 minutes or so had gone, the place erupted as the goal was absolute class no doubt !

Then the next moment of note was Bridges showing what he was made of, he got the ball on the edge of box saw him keep the ball and dance it round 4 players before being unlucky with the shot as it fell just wide of the goal ? he went close once again and Parkin flicked it on for him wonderfully only for it to be judged offside ?

Dawson then got himself involved in a tussle as he was fouled badly and reacted badly to it , Mills came in to calm it all down, as a result Dawson got himself a yellow as well as the Wednesday player ? we were showing fight throughout the team and were not to be messed with ?

Half Time – Hull City 2 – 1 Sheffield Wednesday

The Second half started quietly and if anyone was on top I would have to say it was Wednesday, they were gradually getting on top of the game and they started to create chances, we were not looking great forward but our defense was looking good, Mills seemed to add character to the defense as he barked out instructions to the back four regarding positioning and if any mistakes were made he was there to tell the player what they should have done (after he had mopped it up himself I may add!) the players have great respect for him no doubt and it showed as the same mistake was never made twice, this is the thing I liked to see , not shouting the odds at a mistake on any part but just advice instead, Ashbee and Mills were in conversation very often and the whole team communication showed and it worked as Wednesday were on top no doubt but we did not look in trouble ?

Towards the end of the game Bridges was replaced by Barmby just to mix it up a little as Bridges could not do much second half as Wednesday were camped in our half all be it restricted to long range shots ?

It was Mills again who stormed away from his own box with Barmby and his neat work set up Barmby who really should have scored in my opinion ?.

We held on through the second half and the 5 minutes stoppage time and the final whistle was greeted with loud cheers by the fans as we recorded our first home game victory this season ?

Full Time – Hull City 2 – 1 Sheffield Wednesday

Anyway Player Ratings

Myhill – 8? Top class performance, the last two games he seems to have got back to his best, I think it was that last save against Birmingham that seems to have given him renewed confidence ?

Dawson – 7? Solid throughout, great cross for the second goal ?

Turner – 7? Learned a lot from Mills as the game went on, confidence grew as a result

Mills – 9? Outstanding coup for us and has already stamped his authority on the defensive line, watching him is a pleasure and he is like a second captain on the pitch IMO ?

Ricketts – 7? Another solid performance from Ricketts, working well with Fagan as each game goes on ?

France – 6? Tried very hard and had plenty of tricks up his sleeve but unfortunately he is on the wrong side of the pitch ? still he shows a lot of character and is learning as each game goes on ?

Ashbee – 8? Captain makes his home coming and he is looking as good as, no, better IMO than before his injury, has already answered questions of most of his critics with his performances since his return ?

Livermore – 9? Brilliant game once again from Livermore, more people are starting to sit up and take notice, with Ash alongside him the centre of the park is almost a no go area for opposition, nice to see him going forward more and more and IMO with more conviction than Marney or Welsh ?

Fagan – 7? Another Full back will be going home with nightmares, this guy if he can just get his final ball sorted will be one of the best wingers around ? this will come in time I have no doubt ?

Bridges – 8? Absolute class above other people on the pitch ? tricky and every time he gets the ball you can just tell that he is going to do something special ? sometimes maybe tries stuff that`s a little too tricky when the simple stuff would do ? Cannot take it away from this guy that he is special and he and Parkin could do the business for us ?

Parkin – 9? The Beast is back and chips in with another two goals, this guy could end up with a fair few goals this year IMO and with Bridges alongside him will be awesome, did tire badly but sat back in defense at the end when it was needed, class goals especially that second!

Subs

Barmby – 6? Lacking n fitness, really could have done better and could have had two goals (cross from Mills and that free kick which Fagan and Parkin worked between them to cross it ? ) looked a good few paces off the game ? must be enjoying having these higher level skill wise players around him now ?

Top Tiger? Has to be Danny Mills for his presence and the way he marshaled the back line so that they did not panic even when under pressure at the end of the game ? Livermore and Parkin were not far behind though mind you ?

Tigers Tail? This is a bit harsh because he did not do that bad but in relative to the rest of the team I would have to say France if anyone was our worst player but it was not necessarily his fault, sorry Ryan!

Parky`s Performance – 7/10? Sat up in the stands most of the game as he did against Leicester to get a better view of the game, the team is more his own now no doubt about that, could have maybe made a couple of subs late on but hey we won again !!

Ref Watch – 6/10? Bad mistake on the pen incident (in hindsight mind you as I thought Mills did hand ball it!) other than that at times was a bit whistle happy, 5 minutes added time?!?!??!

Crowd Watch – 8/10? Well done home fans, we were loud, got behind the team and it showed as the place just felt a lot more alive than at previous games!

where to from here ?? QPR away, we were close to taking the spoils there last year so we must not be afraid of them, another battling performance and we may just get another 3 pts to take us away from that bottom three ?

Great review Dazed, the Ref was crap again, Barmby should have scored, the Beast … well what can you say but feed the beast and he will score. It’s great to have Ash back.

I think by the time Xmas ccomes around will be somewhere near midtable. The players have confidence again, and with the central spine of the team so much stronger, from Bo to Bridges and the Beast, through Mills, Turner/Collins, Ash and Livermore, theres no reason why we can’t push on in a big way.
