The Dazed Review – Crystal Palace at the KC

Well It had arrived , a game a lot of us had anticipated as the return of Taylor to his former hunting ground and the questions before the game surrounded the reaction he, Cort and Green would get from the Hull fans in this game, pre game the announcer did the right thing , did not announce Taylor and treat him like any other away manager and allowed for a small round of applause for the returning Green and Cort, after all they had not come for a homecoming, they had come with the aim of beating us ?

Changes to the side were predictable after the game against QPR, Mills returned to centre back in place of the injured Collins and allowed Thelwell his first start of the season, Yeates was to finally get a start after coming through injury and France relegated to the bench ?

As the game kicked off we started the livelier of the two sides and Fagan and Yeates both looked threatening when in possession, Yeates particularly went close on a few occasions and was not afraid to shoot on sight, the good thing about him is he seems very comfortable on either foot, something we have missed on the left hand side all season to date ?

Bridges tried a long range effort that was saved and Parkin as well tried to get in on the act with a long range effort or two ? Palace were out of sorts and at times did not seem to have a game plan of any description, Cort was their one player who seemed to keep the team going as his battle with Parkin was proving over all to be a stalemate which made me think that maybe we would be better playing with a Pacey striker alongside Bridges as we all know that Cort is not the best with the ball around his feet ?

As the half wore on Palace started to get into the game and tempers flared up leading up to Half time as Morrison and Fagan had words, Beast, Mills and Ashbee stepped in and the Ref calmed the situation without dishing out a yellow, Mills and Ashbee carried on the winding up and in the end Morrison earned himself a Yellow soon after as he had let the two tigers get under his skin ?

Half Time – Hull City 0 – 0 Crystal Palace

Palace Withdrew the obviously heated up Morrison at half time and replaced him with Stuart Green who proceeded to show exactly why we sold him, he did nothing of any note and I remember one time he got the ball out on the right and you could see fear in his eyes, he did not know which way to turn or what to do at all as Ashbee beared down on him!

Palace though had got more into the game and went close although without troubling Myhill until Cort it was of all players who got the opener with a shot from about 20 yds, his celebration though I feel may have lost him an admirer or two in the East stand though!

We almost had an instant reply when Bridges again tried from Long range, He then came off for Forster and France came on at right back for Thelwell, who looked slightly off the pace throughout the game in my eyes ?

Crystal Palace then tried to sit back and defend their lead, funny how we saw that all too often under Taylor our selves! We were getting more and more of the ball and trying to break through the dogged defense, the crowd sensed we could nick one and got behind the lads, Yeates, Fagan and Parkin tried all they could and once even Mills though he had a goal as we threw everything we had at them ? Their were calls for a handball by Cort before eventually we got what I felt we deserved ?

Yeates took a corner and did what Andy Dawson had failed to do all game, drilled a ball into the danger area with pace as opposed to floating one for the keeper to catch at his leisure, the ball went in and somehow out of it all Turner popped up to score his first league goal for City ? 4 minutes of added time followed and we were the ones who looked like we could have scored but it remained 1-1

Full Time – Hull City 1 – 1 Crystal Palace

Anyway Player Ratings

Myhill – 6? Only had one shot on target against him and that was the goal, his kicking at times was very poor though ?

Dawson – 6? Defensively good but had a poorer than usual day with set pieces, needs to work on them throughout this break coming up ?

Turner – 7? Solid game on the whole with Mills as his partner and good to see him get his goal ?

Mills – 7? Like a second captain and seems to be enjoying his time here, commands respect from his team mates, opposition players and even the referees!

Thelwell – 5? First game for a while and it showed to be honest, not a good game and his mistake ultimately led to their goal ?

Yeates – 7? Good game all round, good with both feet and most definitely not afraid to have a go at players or shoot, great ball for the goal as well ?

Marney – 7? Did well I thought, still needs to try and offer more going forward but him and Ashbee seemed to work well in the middle ?

Ashbee – 7? Another solid game from Ash, it`s great to have him back ?

Fagan – 7? Caused havoc down the right wing as usual, I liked it in the first half when he switched sides with Yeates for a while as well to mix things up a little ?

Bridges – 6? Sat a bit too deep but not a bad game from Bridges ?

Parkin – 6? Was in a battle with Cort all afternoon and I think he did well in that but sometimes a little off the pace, especially towards the end ?

Subs

Forster – 6 ? Added some pace at the right time and helped push the Palace Defense deeper and deeper in the last twenty minutes ?

France – 6? Jack of all trades played at Right back, and to be fair did not do a bad job ?

Top Tiger? Probably Yeates, offered us a lot more down the left wing, Mills and Turner did well too though ?

Tigers Tail? Thelwell, off the pace and some sloppy play while he was on, much of it down to lack of match sharpness ?

Parky`s Performance – 7/10? Right substitutions at the right time ? starting eleven was probably the right one as well I think ?

Ref Watch – 5/10? Seemed very unwilling to book anyone and missed what I thought was a penalty in the second half ?

Crowd Watch – 7/10? Good attendance and really tried to encourage the players especially towards the end of the game ?

where to from here?? Another international break beckons and we are in a better position than we were a month ago that`s for certain, need to work on the set pieces some more I think and looking forward to the returning Coles in the back four ? Burnley the next game away ? oh yeah small matter of two England games in between as well !!

Another good review dazed. 100% right with the ref, why are they so crap?

  • abellardo says:

Sorry mdjw_41 but Thelwell should have been hauled off at half time he was a massive liability, scared on the ball , uncommitted off it thankk gos Danny Coles is back. Thought we were goof 1st half barring Dawsons corners but Parky seems unsure what to do once we go a goal down , knowing PT was gonna defend a 1-0 lead why not throw Forster (still not sure about him though) with Parkin and Bridges and run at them. Think its time John welsh got a run instead of Marney, nice to see Yeates running at players down the left it made impressive viewing, A point , we are off the bottom and the bottom 5 are bunched up nicely for a team to break away. With 2 weeks off I hope Parky can come up with a gameplan for October , if we are still in the bottom 2 at the end of the month I think its time to prep for for a change of management in January before its too late !!!

Good review and this is a big point for us.We are off the bottom.I think our next 3 games are vital and think we could win all 3. I dont think we sould panic if were in the bottom 2 by the end of the month. We have a great young manager and im sure he get it right with our support.

Great review – spot on, although I thought Thelwell was OK at times and needs more game time – but don’t see him getting it! Dawson needs to work on set pieces without a doubt. Deserved the point. Great atmosphere towards the end and I thought we might have got a second!!

  • Twti says:

Forgot to mention above – nice of the ref to shake Kuqi’s hand when he was substituted. Are there any decent ref’s in the championship?
