A few weeks ago, I decided to make contact with some former Hull City player’s – one of which gave us the privilege of an exclusive interview for Vital Hull.

We asked you for your views, and we put them to former City goalkeeper Alan Fettis. Here is what he said about his City playing days and the present directions.

1. You are now a goalkeeper at Bury, how is that going?

Its going ok. We have not had a great start to the season, but we have some good players so I’m sure we can mount a challenge as the season progresses.

2. What was the greatest game he played in a city shirt ?

I remember a game at home versus Bradford City which we won 3.1. It was always a big game because of Terry Dolan and Jeff Lee’s connection. Deano got sent off after 10 minutes by Jeff Winter so it was all hands to the pump. We defended brilliantly and got a great result.

3. What was his best save for city and why ?

I made a few. Too many to mention.

4. What was his greatest moment as a footballer and why ?

Playing for my country was a great achievement. Playing in the premiership was also a great feeling, but i remember my first league game for City v Reading at Elm Park. We won 1-0, Leigh Jenkinson scored and I was sh**ing myself.

5. Does he have any regrets from his career ?

I listened to the wrong people a couple of times during my career. You always think you know best, but that isn’t the case sometimes.

6. Who would be or is his all time goalkeeping hero ( if he has one ) and WHY?

I wouldn’t say heroes but certainly people I admired. Pat Jennings, Neville Southall, Peter Schmeichel and Tim Flowers.

7. What was it like to score not one but two goals in a game? It must have been a strange afternoon.

It was two different games. v Oxford as a sub for Linton Brown (won 3-1) and last game of the season v Blackpool (won2-1). Great feeling at the time and looking back, quite surreal.

8. What was it like playing at the KC Stadium rather than Boothferry Park?

KC is a fantastic stadium and it was great to play there, but I really enjoyed Boothferry Park.

9. Who is the best manager you’ve played under?

I would have to say Terry Dolan. I played my best football under him as manager at Hull and York. Roy Hodgson at Blackburn Rovers was excellent, although i didn’t play much, i found training enjoyable. Both were good man-managers also.

10. What was your darkest moment when playing for City ?

Returning to city and not really producing the form I showed at my previous clubs, for various reasons.

11. Who was the best City player you played with?

I would have to say Dean Windass

12. What did it feel like to represent your country? and how did this compare to playing for City?

When you play for your country you get to play against players like Jurgen Klinsmann, Raul, Figo etc., in fantastic stadiums all around the world. You don’t get that in the 2nd division.

13. Do you still keep in touch with some of the players you’ve played with – if so who?

Quite a few.

14. What do you make of Hull City’s current situation?

Its a great situation to be in. Great chairman, good manager, playing in the championship in a wonderful stadium in front of 20k people every other week. What a difference to 10 years ago.

How do you think the Tigers will do this season?

Ideally playoffs, realistically mid table.

Do you have a message for the fans?

Keep The Faith!

Here at Vital Hull, we would like to thank Alan Fettis for this fantastic opportunity and his help with this interview. We wish him all the best with his recovery from injury at the moment and in his future playing career and beyond.
