Hull City have seen a bid for Jamie Cureton rejected by Colchester despite the striker asking for a transfer request.

The request, which came about last week, was quickly rejected by Colchester, but a host of clubs have now been alerted to his intentions to leave the Essex club.

Two teams are believed to have made formal offers to Colchester with one of those being Hull City’s bid of £250,000. Paul Duffen, the new Tigers chairman confirmed in an Essex newspaper report that the Tigers were one of those teams that had made an offer, but the bid had been rejected.

Colchester are believed to be holding out for a bid in the region of £750,000 with the Hull daily Mail reporting that the Tigers will make an improved bid of £500,000 this week.

Cureton has one year left on his current deal at Layer Road and the 31 year old striker believes that at this stage of his career, he owes it to himself to move to a ‘bigger club.’

Speaking to an Essex newspaper, Cureton said;

‘I will be 33-years-old when my current contract runs out next summer so I would like to be given the opportunity now to talk to the bigger teams who are interested in me.’

‘I got to the situation earlier this summer where I sat down and took a good look at what was left of my career for the future.’

‘I’m not selfish and I’m not silly. I know Colchester’s situation and I know they can’t match what the bigger teams are offering players.’

‘But I’m not 21-years-old anymore and I know there’s interest in me out there.’

Cureton has already seen his strike partner from last season Chris Iwelumo leave Colchester on a free to move to Charlton Athletic, and despite Colchester’s impressive form last season, the same is not expected during the 2007/08 season.

Colchester, who have already lost two key personnel, will not want to lose another key member of their squad, but with the striker wanting to leave coupled with an attractive transfer bid, Colchester may be tempted to cash in on their prized asset.

Not sure we should be looking at 33yr olds!

  • Matt_Us says:

Yeah – but he means moving now; he’s 31.

Do you think you can hold on to him Matt_Is or are you resigned to him leaving and are hoping for as much as possible fee wise?

  • SirLesMutrie says:

Only as good as the service you get, need a quality midfielder to play the telling pass along the ground if Jamie Cureton is to join the Tiger Nation.

I was quite annoyed about it all on vital colchester but as long as we still have a Col U then we should be happy. This is the only season in living memory for me where the club has made a profit without the directors having to pay. It’s black June, some are saying. Others think we’ll be ok with a few loan signings…

  • Matt_Us says:

No I don’t think he will stay, in answer to the ealier question. I don’t think I hold it against him…. I can;t make up my mind!! He’ll go though, no doubt – you’re right, we just need as much money as possible.

£750k seems a bit steep for a 33 year old!

  • dazdude says:

hes 31 not 33 hes sayin when his deal runs out he will be and he wants to play for a bigger club b4 that

  • matty17x says:

750k is alot of money but he was the top scorer.I personal think we shouldnt buy him.If we do with him and Windass up front not very fast are they.Only time will tell.If Windass had of had a full season with us last season im sure he would get as many.

  • South Bank Tiger says:

750K? No, we’ll look somewhere else.

  • tigerscar says:

750K is far too much for Cureton. On the subject of strikers, does anyone know how much Blackburn want for Franny Jeffers? I know Ipswich have had a bid turned down. I’d sooner see Jeffers at KC if we’re talking a minumum fee of 750k.

  • matty17x says:

Think Blackburn are holding out for 1.5m. Id Rather see Jeffers then him to be honest.Cant see it happening tho.

  • ernshaw says:

at $750.he will still be playing for colchester……….
