Work in progress or a false dawn – take your pick

As a city supporter I try to be positive but the game against Charlton really tested my resolve.

Firstly we learned yet again that Robertson is not a full back, he is too naive. Look at how easily he was outflanked for Charlton’s first goal. He is however a good midfield player with a surging run and in my opinion should be in the team in place of Huddlestone who seems to play when he wants. I think with the exception of Robertson the rest of the back 4 are okay. Odubajo looks quick and strong and a good buy. Why oh why did we get rid of a really good full back in Rosenior who could play left or right back. Maybe we should try Maguire or Bruce at full back. There is also Taylor.

In midfield we have the reliable Elmo, Clucas and Robertson so that leaves one place which should have gone to Ince but on what has been in evidence so far should go to Hayden.

The strikers are the most problematic of all. Obviously with his pace Akpom should play, but who with. Aluko is the obvious one but he flatters to deceive most of the time. I always feel as if Aluko thinks he has to beat the whole opposition before he gets into a goal scoring position and even then he has to make absolutely sure he scores which invariably means he loses the chance. It might be better if he took the simple option sometimes and just hit the ball!

Jelavic and Hernandez couldn’t display more clearly that they don’t want to be here and quite honestly city should cut their losses and get rid. Okay they’ve both scored but one was a penalty and the other opportunistic, no great skill in either.

We need a big centre forward to play alongside Akpom, and if the championship is too expensive we might need to look lower down the leagues. The other option on a short term basis is to play Luer or the other sub Calaum Jahraldo-Martin?

So far as the goalkeeper is concerned we’ve seen the best and worst of McGregor in a week, an absolute howler against Wolves yet a stunning one on one save yesterday against Charlton. He needs competition and quickly! As I’ve said before where is Paul Robinson?

I’ve previously said we have £15 mill to spend but I had another thought. Maybe Mr Allam is recouping some of his investment and Steve Bruce hasn’t got as much as he thought to spend.

I think Mr Allam needs to back Steve Bruce or sell the club to someone who will. I know over the years a few chairmen have tried to run Hull City as a business and it’s an admirable sentiment but realistically it is a loss making hobby and if you are indifferent to football as Mr Allam appears to be, cut your losses and let someone else have a go.
