With today`s news of Nigel Pearson`s appointment as manager of Hull City, Vital Hull takes a look at his established career.

As a player, Pearson started his career at Shrewsbury Town before moving to Sheffield Wednesday for £250,000. While with The Owls, he captained the side to 1990/91 League Cup success, winning the man of the match award in the process. Two years later, Pearson was a vital component of the side that reached both the League and FA Cup final, but a broken leg in the semi-final stage of the League Cup curtailed his season, subsequently missing out on both cup final appearances.

Moving to Middlesbrough, Pearson captained his side to two promotions and three cup finals during a highly successful spell in the North East; a time in which he also played with current City player Nick Barmby.

Moving onto management, Pearson started in Carlisle, ensuring survival in 1998/99 thanks to Jimmy Glass` “infamous” goal. A series of assistant roles followed at Stoke City, West Bromwich Albion and to Stuart Pearce with the England U21`s.

A move to Newcastle followed, initially as manager and latterly as coach to Sam Allardyce before moving to Southampton where a final day victory ensured their survival in the Championship.

At Leicester City, Pearson achieved promotion from League 1 in 2008/09 before leading the team to a play-off semi final in 2009/10. In the battle for Premier League promotion, Leicester lost on penalties to Cardiff City in what would turn out to be his last game as Leicester manger.

Following Hull`s approach, Pearson signed a three year deal together with his assistants Steve Walsh and Craig Shakespeare; a deal that has seen City pay a reported £350,000 in compensation.

What does the future hold? The coming season will tell us, but with the backing of the Chairman, new arrivals are expected although the club`s focus remains on reducing the wage bill.
