Ashbee and Andrews

With a winning percentage of 44%, Ash and Andrews were almost double the nearest percentage when we asked you who you would like to see as the midfiled pairing for Hull City.

Of course, although the vote has resulted in this, we have only seen this pairing three times this season. Ash, as we all know is currently suffering from a long term knee injury, and hopes to be back for the end of the season, although I don’t think we will see him till the start of next season.

Andrews was injured in the third game of the season at Wolverhampton Wanderers, meaning a spell on the sidelines for three months, and has only just returned to the first team frame in recent weeks – making a welcome return to the squad.

When they played together – in the brief glimpses we saw – they looked a good partnership. Both talk a lot on the pitch, and Ash is a crucial player for us that has been missed. Both can tackle, can pass and could influence play. I look forward to seeing this partnership formed again in the future.

With 24% of the votes, the partnership of Damien Delaney and John Welsh was rated the second highest. This is the partnership of late, used whilst Andrews was nearing his return from injury. Damien – usually a centre-back started his new role in the home game against Cardiff. Fans wouldn’t have believed this before the game – fearing the worst – yet he had a great game and was man of the match, carrying his midfield form over our last five games.

John Welsh moved from Liverpool during the season and will make the move permanent in Januray. Welsh will be a huge asset to City over coming years. A good passer and with good tackling ability, Welsh is an all-round midfielder, and looks set to have a bright future ahead of him.

With 15% John Welsh and Nick Barmby were voted in third. Nick Barmby’s position is constantly discussed, and taylor rarely plays him in a normal midfield role. He now no longer plays as a striker as much, but has played recent games as a left midfielder (like hi did against Ipswich Town.)

Although many fans have called for a midfield position for Nicky, perhaps this vote shows that City fans don’t want Nicky in midifled, and would prefer our other options (when available.) I happen to agree, and would rather see Nicky play where he did against Ipswich than being in midfield or as a striker.

Other options that were voted for came in the following order:

(4) Delaney and Andrews (7%) – Interesting since that was our most recent pairing of midfielders.

(Joint 5th) Welsh and Woodhouse / Green and Welsh
