Phil Brown was far from impressed following Hull City`s 4-0 defeat at Crewe Alexandra.

The Tigers found themselves two down after three minutes, Calvin Zola scoring both goals before two penalties made the score four before half-time. Bernard Mendy, who gave away both penalties, missed one himself with the score at 2-0.

Mendy, who had impressed against Chesterfield in mid-week struggled, as did the entire starting eleven that featured a mix of new signings and youth players. The City manager had intended to keep his starting eleven on the pitch for 60-70 minutes but a feeling of embarrassment at half-time led to eleven substitutions being made.

The second half was an improvement with City creating chances going forward and looking more confident at the back as Michael Turner was brought on. Although Brown was able to take some positives from the game, it showed that Hull still lack central defenders if they are to remain in the Premier League.

Michael Turner has continued the form that saw him instrumental in last season`s promotion campaign whilst Wayne Brown has struggled to rediscover his form. The youngsters which have been tried and tested have also failed to make their mark, suggesting Brown must delve into the transfer market sooner rather than later. The 6`5“ tall Anthony Gardner should have signed on loan from Tottenham Hotspur, but the club has not officially announced his arrival yet.

The pairing of Michael Turner and Anthony Gardner will remain weak without any back-up and Phil Brown will need to look at signing at least two centre-backs before turning his attention to his strike force.

The poor showing at Crewe Alexandra has acted as a wake up call for the fans and the club, and the travelling supporters to Boundary Park on Tuesday night will hope to see a better performance against Oldham Athletic.
