Match winner James Chester and match saver Allan McGregor have both spoken following our opening day win over Queens Park Rangers.

Starting with the goalscorer, Chester told the Official Site that he was delighted to have scored the winner and secured us the three points, and he really feels it gives us a good platform to build on now in the coming games.

‘It was nice to get on the scoresheet. Snoddy was putting in some great balls in the first half that we couldn’t quite get on the end of. After his injury, Quinny came on and carried on where Robert had left off and thankfully I lose my man to get on the end of one and stick it in the net. It was massive for us to start with a win.’

Chester goes on to say that we didn’t win as many as we would’ve liked away from home last season, so to start this campaign and get the win straight off was a fantastic start.

He also admits that manager Steve Bruce ‘has a few words’ at half time as he wasn’t happy with how they dominated in the first period, and thankfully for us we started the second half as we ended the first and kept kicking on.

As for the penalty award against him, he felt McGregor’s save was ‘justice’ given the circumstances.

‘I’m 100% certain it wasn’t handball. It didn’t even hit my hand. Even if it had, my hands were right down by my side so I’m not sure what I’m supposed to do.’

Joking that McGregor has already told him he ‘owes him a pint or two’ now.

That brings us nicely to our stopper, who played down the save really as just being a good piece of guesswork.

‘It was just a guess, you can either stand up, go left or go right. Even if you’ve studied the person taking it, they can change their mind anyway. I’d rather not have to do it every week though!’

With that being a big test for us in the moment, McGregor went on to say that he felt ‘we defended our hearts out’ over the course of the game and he feels the clean sheet was nothing more than we deserved following our efforts.

‘It was a great team performance and it was great to start with a win. Our away fans were different class and spurred us on.’
