Resilience Pleases Bruce

Opening day of the Premier League season and Hull marched on following our European victory.

One nil thanks to a James Chester goal, proved to be enough to beat newly promoted Queens Park Rangers and it was certainly the tough game we expected going into it with them riding high on confidence following last season.

The neutral would no doubt say QPR were worthy of a point, but all we care about is played one, won one and our first three points of the campaign.

Speaking to the Official Site manager Steve Bruce said our now ‘trademark’ resilience was the biggest player in the game, helping us to victory – especially as Allan McGregor won us the extra two points with his penalty save.

‘Particularly in the first half, we didn’t play in the way that we wanted to, we kept surrendering possession. But the resilience of the players was there for all to see again. It really is incredible. We’ve dug in and come away with a result that not many people could see at half time.’

Bruce goes on to joke that by the end of the game his opposite number Harry Redknapp had ‘slung’ four forwards on and talk of 352 and systems went quickly out of the window and it was a good old fashioned ‘get it in the box’ routine.

But we hung on still, coped with it, and got the luck and the bounce of the ball when we needed to.

With Chester scoring and conceding the penalty, the gaffer went on to say that he was disappointed by the referees decision.

‘James deserved to be on the winning side for his performance. He put in some great challenges, had they scored from that penalty, it would have been unjust on him but my goalkeeper played it well. The penalty decision was ridiculous. We see too many games decided by horrible decisions like that.’

The gaffer was also delighted with the performance of Andrew Robertson who was making his debut.

Ending the interview he confirmed that both Alex Bruce and Robert Snodgrass came off through injury, and Bruce’s isn’t a major concern it’s just a slight back knock, but the worry is Snodgrass twisting his knee could be a more lengthy lay off – as ligament damage is feared, but a scan will clear that up in the coming days.
