The Dazed Review – Barnsley at the KC

Well After an entertaining game at West Brom hopes were high that maybe we could turn over Barnsley and carry on playing football in the same vein that we did on the previous Saturday, The crowd were all anticipating a good game and the atmosphere was a good one ? The game started with the only change being the one that most expected with France replacing Elliott after he showed he can do a job on the left hand side and with the impending arrival of Yeates he would need to impress again to keep his place in the future ? Barmby on the bench was also nice to see as the bench had an attacking look to it as did the starting eleven ?

So, the game starts and the early exchanges suggest that we are in for a few goals ? Fagan had an early chance and Ricketts also had a go in the first few minutes while Barnsley had a couple of efforts which Myhill did well to stop ? Fagan then took the ball on the right hand side and nutmegged the full back before placing a low cross to Parkin who calmly slotted the chance away ? this as you could imagine set the crowd on their feet ? Hull then proceeded to attack and the football we played was breathtaking at times ? Another chance came a few minutes later and before you know it Parkin has looped another one in and we are 2-0 up inside ten minutes !!! If the first ten minutes were anything to go by this was going to be one hell of a game ? We carried on dominating and Marney, Fagan and Welsh all had chances ? Marney had a couple of shots were he could have and should have maybe done better, Welsh had a long range drive that Duffy just failed to get on the rebound and Fagan was causing trouble all night down that right hand side, he seemed to have the full back in his back pocket beating him at will ? Barnsley kept on fighting though and had a couple of chances before the end of the half and in stoppage time in the first half they got the lifeline they needed when Mcindoe scored from close range to give them something positive to take in at half time ? on the concourse at half time it was smiles all around and despite them getting one back no one thought that they could pull it back ?. How wrong we were!!!

Half Time Hull City 2-1 Barnsley

The teams came out for the second half and three minutes into the second half Barnsley somehow equalized ? this started to get a few people nervous, most importantly our team! We started to slip into performances that we had seen last season all too often and errors started creeping into our play ? We still had chances, Fagan proved why he is being played out wide as he had all the time in the world from a cross from Parkin but his shot went high and wide ? Marney had been replaced by Andrews which I was surprised at until I saw Marney being led straight down the tunnel which led me to think he was maybe injured?

Barnsley, full credit to them they dug in a fought hard and then with under 20 minutes to go they got what their hard work had called for, they snatched a win, Myhill I think was partly to blame for this one but the defense as a whole must take the blame for the way they made silly simple errors which had cost us the game ? by this time the Crowd were starting to get on players and even Parkys back which I found quite hard to believe ? yeah we did not perform in the second half, yeah we made silly errors ? but the season is TWO games old for god`s sake ? if this had been the 8th or 10th game without winning at the start of the season I would agree that something needs to be done ? One thing to note is that we will see improvement ? Pro Zone is specifically for this ? as the season wears on we will see players not making the same old mistakes as the pro zone technology will pin point errors so that It gives Parky a lot more to work with at training ? and nothing is missed by Pro zone ?

Anyway Player Ratings

Myhill – 6 ? Some good saves but looked slightly not as confident as he did against West Brom ?

Dawson – 6 ? Not as good as on Saturday but still performed quite well I guess ?

Turner – 6 ? Did not look the same player as he did on Saturday ? carried on the theme of not looking as confident and some of his clearances were very shaky to say the least! ?

Delaney – 6 ? Better than on Saturday but still trying to forge this partnership with Turner ? either his or Turners place could come under threat when Coles arrives though ?

Ricketts – 7 ? The pick of a shaky defense ? held Mcindoe for most of the game well and played well with Fagan in front of him again ? looks to be a good partnership he is forging with Fagan down the right hand side

Fagan – 7 ? Played very well ? Frightening pace and their full back must have been dreading the game after 10 minutes ? faded a little in the second half and still needs to work on his finishing IMO ?

Marney – 7 ? First half he ran forward and kept on having a go ? get that feeling that once he gets one in then he will get a hatful from midfield ? just needs to find his shooting boots to get that first one mind you ! ?

Welsh – 8 ? My man of the match ? never stopped and you could see how much he is loving the partnership with Marney ? they swap and change and work so well as a unit in the middle of the park, Ashbee will have serious trouble trying to get into the side with these two here ! ?

France – 6 ? Did not do too badly with some good forward runs and neat passing ? did not seem as impressive as on Saturday though ?

Duffy – 6 ? Huffed and puffed and worked hard for the 90 minutes but he, like Marney, desperately need that first goal and then watch the boy score for fun ala Crouch last season ! ?

Parkin – 7 ? Great game from the beast reminding us all of his finishing and strength and ball control ? answered a few critics (including myself!) with that performance ?

Subs

Elliott – 6 ? Not on long enough to really impact and did not look too interested when he was on to be honest ?

Andrews – 5 ? Bye bye Andrews methinks ?

Burgess – 6 ? Not too bad but will maintain that he needs to go out on loan to get regular football ?

Top Tiger ? John Welsh ? another big performance and long may they continue ?

Tigers Tail ? Think it`s between Turner, Delaney, Dawson, Myhill or Duffy ? take your pick out of them ? mine would be Turner

Parky`s Performance ? First half was brilliant tactics wise ? bringing off Marney seems a little strange though and to hear him after the game he sounded like he had been on the pitch for 90 minutes, scored both goals and let in all three himself ? he genuinely sounded upset at that game and spoke very well in the way he did not name names but said that we made errors on the simple things that need to be worked on ? you do sense that when he says it needs to be worked on that it will be worked on and not take 10 games to get right ?

Ref Watch ? 6/10 not too bad, some dodgy decisions each way but over all did quite well ?

Crowd Watch ? to be honest, watching the mass exodus and the constant slagging off of the team and manager in the second half, I actually felt quite embarrassed to be part of that crowd ? those people who say “I paid £20 to come watch this rubbish” I have a simple answer for you ? don`t go !!! I would happily have only 14,000 there but them all getting behind the team ?

where to from here?

Well it`s the Derby game and it`s on sky ? be a good time to break the Sky hoodoo that we have got at the minute ? Team wise not a lot needs changing ? I would be tempted to stick with the same XI that started last night ? let`s just hope that the simple things are worked on and we do not lose heart as quickly or as sharply as we did last night ?

Nice review Dazed. Have to agrree that Marney & Welsh look good together in midfield. Defence still leaves me nervous though, but Parky admitted that in the aftermatch interview so hopefully he can work on it for Saturday.

Good review,Very gutted we lost,Barnsley aint owt special.we played well 1st 35mins but defendin we were not that good.I also think its time to get rid of some players Like Elliott, Burgess and Andrews. They aint up for this League.Scorin will be our problem this season until we get McPhee back fit.Think we should bring in an exeperence forward on Loan.

marney sat out training today although his groin area was strapped up. barmby looked sharp today too. another thing is although i agree that welsh and marney look class together, and from a purely footballing point of view, you couldn’t see ash getting back in, but the way we went down so easily with little fight shows how much we do need him. also from watching training today it is obvious that he is one of the biggest characters in the city dressing room and we do need him on the pitch.
