Duffy moved from Scottish Premier League side Falkirk last week for £250,000 in a deal which the Falkirk manager said quadrupled Duffy’s weekly wage.

Hughes said he had little choice than to let the player move onto brighter things and attempt to further his career in England.

‘Daryl was out of contract at the end of the season,’ explained Hughes. ‘We got him for nothing so it is a good bit of business.

‘He had expressed an interest in going, and he is going down there for a weekly wage that’s three or four times what we were paying him, so we could not compete with that.’

Duffy was paid by Falkirk around the £450 mark a week, meaning if reports are true his is now being paid just over £1,500 a week by the Tigers.

Hughes wants to see his prized asset do well, and would welcome the player back if he ever wanted to return to Falkirk.

‘I am quite sure he will go on to bigger and better things, but if he ever wants to come back up the road, then I would like to think he enjoyed his time here so much that he would give us a call first.’
