Hudd Howler Haunts Hull

How costly will Tom Huddlestone’s howler of a miss for Hull against AS Trencin in the Europa League qualifier prove to be? We’ll find out soon enough.

Steve Bruce branded his miss ‘easier to score’ as we had to settle for a 0-0 draw in Slovakia on Thursday.

The nil-nil draw in Zilina could have, probably, at least ended one-nil to Hull had Huddlestone not seen his penalty on 61-minutesnot saved before somehow managing to put a point-blank follow-up against the crossbar and then over the bar!

Bruce, who has seen his side miss something like three of the last four penalties taken, had complete faith in the England man to score his penalty but having failed to do so he now knows that his side need to ‘start practising’ them a little more: ‘You’d have put the house on that Tom would score.

‘It was easier to score. We’ve all missed penalties, we’ve all missed big chances in front of goal, you don’t intend to do it.

‘But we’ve missed our last three or four I think so we better start practising because we’re not very good at them.’

Huddlestone himself later took to social networking site Twitter to offer up his apologies for the miss but remains positive about the job being seen through.

Adding: ‘Can only apologise to every (sic) for a lapse in concentration and thinking I had scored the rebound before I had. Ridiculous on my behalf.

‘On a positive note, the lads worked hard and defended well throughout deserved our clean sheet. All to play for next week.’

The game in Slovakia was always going to be difficult, and Bruce knew this even though Hull were strong favourites, but he still feels confident and believes that we’ll be better for this game.

Bruce added: ‘We needed a game like this. I was always a bit worried we’d be undercooked a bit, it was always a big ask.

‘We’ve only been back at work two-and-a-half weeks. We knew it was going to be difficult whatever team you play, especially in the middle of pre-season. But overall we’ll be better for this game.

‘The one thing you’ve got to do is take your chances when they come your way. Unfortunately we haven’t taken them and we had one or two really great opportunities that would have made the second leg more comfortable.’
