The three clubs currently occupying the relegation places all lost yesterday as Hull City remained outside of the relegation zone despite not playing a game.

Leeds United were defeated away at Cardiff City thanks to a Michael Chopra free-kick scored on the stroke of half-time.

Leeds result was made to look worse when Cardiff twice had players sent-off. Goal scorer Chopra was first to go with just under twenty-five minutes remaining before Simon Walton was then dismissed with five minutes of the match remaining.

Southend have enjoyed a resurgence in their fortunes in recent games but came crashing back down to earth yesterday. An away trip to Sunderland saw Southend defeated four nil thanks to a brace from Stern John and strikes from David Connoly and Thobias Hysen.

The last relegation spot is occupied by Barnsley, who the Tigers play in two days time. Their away trip to Southampton saw the Yorkshire club thrashed by five goals to two. A hat-trick from midfielder Andrew Surman did the majority of the damage as Barnsley also had Daniel Nardiello sent-of for a second yellow card.

Luton Town recorded a creditable away draw at Stoke City as both teams were reduced to ten men whilst Leicester City gained a comfortable win over relegation strugglers Coventry City three nil at the Walker’s Stadium.

Tuesday’s match at Oakwell has now gained more significance as a victory for the Tigers could move the club three points ahead of the drop-zone with a game in hand over the bottom three.
