Marney To Retain Midfield Place

The latest poll from Vital Hull asked you your views on midfielder Dean Marney, and here is what you said.

After making his first appearance since Birmingham City away against Crystal Palace, the midfielder will now be hopeful of securing a more permanent role in the Tigers team. With Livermore and Ashbee having been Parkinson`s favoured midfield pairing, a late injury to David Livermore allowed someone to get the opportunity to impress.

That responsibility fell to Dean Marney, a supposedly one million pound signing from Tottenham Hotspur, but although he wasn’t as poor as past performances, the skill and quality that was expected on his arrival hasn’t materialised yet. His fellow out of form midfielder John Welsh was another possibility to fill the midfield gap left by Livermore, and it seems the former Liverpool player is a popular choice amongst City fans.

24% of voters want John Welsh reinstated in the first team. Many fans find it bad enough he doesn’t make the starting eleven but to not make the sixteen man squad is criminal. The midfielder has had to make do with reserve team football, and Welsh scored the Tigers only goal in the defeat to Rotherham on Wednesday afternoon. Under Peter Taylor, the midfielder never sustained a run in the team and under Phil Parkinson the effect has continued. Despite the player being a regular England U21 international, he can’t break into the Tigers midfield setup.

A small percentage, 10%, believed that Dean Marney’s inclusion in the middle worked well and that it provided Parkinson’s team with a balance between attack and defence. After disappointing results in the opening week of the season, Parkinson adopted a cautious approach that saw Ian Ashbee paired with David Livermore in order to provide the team stability. It did work, but if City are to move up the table the correct blend of attacking and defensive football must be implemented.

Dean Marney’s start to his Hull City career hasn’t impressed may of the Tigers fans. With Livermore injured and Welsh seemingly always out of favour, can this be Marney’s chance to shine as he looks to get his season up and running.

He hasn’t impressed me so far, Welsh is better. Give Marney a few more starts. if he’s still no good then drop him again.

I think Marney should be given another two or three runs out to impress, then give Welsh his chance for 5 to 6 games to prove his worth

There’s no doubt he can play better but perhaps we expected too much from him at the start?

I think we should give Marney a few more games, he just needs a goal. But what will Parkinson do when Livermore ‘s back? Will he go back to Ashbee and Livermore?
