Hull City may have left it late to find a winner against Ipswich Town but it was no less that what City deserved after a dominant display on Saturday afternoon.
Steve Bruce opted to field the same side which had won at Hillsbrough a fortnight ago, James Chester only fit enough for a place on the bench while Andy Dawson continued in the absence of Joe Dudgeon. Paul McKenna was again in midfield as Robert Koren`s injury looks to keep him sidelined for a further week.
Ipswich, with only one win on the road this season and a manager under pressure clearly arrived at the KC intent with earning a point. Indeed, the away side rarely ventured out of their own half in the first twenty-five minutes, such as City`s dominance and attacking threat. However, City could not force an early goal with Olofinjana shooting over on the stretch, Aluko seeing an effort cleared off the line and then missing after good work to open an opportunity and Simpson seeing his effort dragged wide.
As City pondered on chances missed, Ipswich scored. A quick free-kick to Jay Emmanual-Thomas saw Ipswich`s main attacking threat jink between Rosenior and McKenna. McShane moved to close down but stopped, allowing the Ipswich forward time to move past and shoot through Ben Amos from a narrow angle.
The second half started much the same, with Quinn going close, Simpson firing over and Ipswich keeper Henderson palming a Faye header onto the bar. As City pushed for an equaliser through the introduction of Aaron Mclean, the away side could have extended their lead, seeing a header cleared off the line before DJ Campbell inexplicably prodded wide when better positioned to score after a one-on-one opportunity.
With twenty minutes to go, Steve Bruce pushed for the winner, introducing James Chester for Abdoulaye Faye and Nick Proschwitz for Liam Rosenior. City moved Elmohamady to right-back, although with Dawson and the Egyptian pushing on, City were in effect playing with two defenders and four strikers.
Elmohamady, now with more attacking purpose drove to the byline past Daryl Murphy and drove a low cross with German striker Proschwitz slotted in at the near post, his first goal for the club since his big money summer move.
City pushed for a winner, roared on by a vocal KC crowd. Quinn hit a post with a long drive, Mclean was twice denied having earlier seen his own one-on-one opportunity saved be Handerson before Mclean then missed a near open goal from ten yards, shooting over. Despite the miss, City conjured one final opportunity, Elmohamady again the suppler. The on loan Sunderland player this time crossed from deep, finding the head of Proschwitz who headed powerfully into the bottom corner of the net to announce his arrival in Hull and seal City an important, and thoroughly deserved, three points.
