Time To Bring Duke Back?

Phil Brown must quickly decide who he wants his number one keeper to be. Will it be the highly rated Bo Myhill or the steady Matt Duke.

Myhill has always been regarded as the club`s number one keeper since his arrival from Aston Villa for £50,000 when the side was in League 1. As he became part of that promotion winning side, Myhill was given a chance in the Championship and many would say his exploits during our first season helped keep us up.

This season, Myhill started as number one but was immediately dropped for Matt Duke. Duke produced a run of steady performances before he was ruled out for injury. The opportunity to regain for first team jersey was fully taken by Myhill but in last nights game, the problems of the highly rated Championship keeper were there for all to see.

Myhill is incapable of making his mind up. Does he come to claim a cross or does he stay in his starting position? All too often, he does neither, shuffling back and forth as the ball comes swinging dangerously in meaning the defence has no idea if they are to deal with the cross or if their keeper is dealing with the situation.

Eventually, it cost the club the first goal last night. A Andy Reid free-kick was Myhill`s ball to deal with. However, a combination of poor punching and Charlton players putting him off meant he dropped the ball and Luke Varney tapped it in.

The second goal was as a result of Myhill`s inability to make a decision. With a ball looping over the defence, Myhill stayed on his line making it easy for the Charlton player to square the ball to Iwelumo who finished easily. With Michael Turner pushed up-front at the time, Myhill must have surely realised he was playing a sweeper / keeper role and any long ball knocked over the top should have been met with a rushing out Myhill clearing the ball.

With the Tigers in twelfth, they can`t afford to give away sloppy goals if they wish to progress up the table. The answer? Well, no-one can say for certain but if Duke is back to full fitness he fully deserves his starting place back after a string of competent performances earlier in the season.

Agreed, strength at the back is what PB has claimed, yet Bo appears to be a weak link. We all know he is a good keper, but good might not be enough in the CCC if we have aspirations of play-offs.

Think Duke deserves another opportunity to claim the goalkeeping jersey starting at Palace. A guy of Myhills size should be commanding his box and with the protection afforded by refs these days ultimately cleaning out the opposition forwards.

Im not sure what to make of this.I used to rate Myhill But i dont anymore. He is a good shoot stopper.Think we need someone who can command the Box.Maybe a new keeper is needed.

This article is codswallop. For the first goal, three Charlton players jumped at him and he still managed to get to the ball. Where were the defenders?
Blaming Myhill for the second goal as well!! A joke article.

afew seasons ago boaz was amazing. now he isnt good enough.

  • mdjw_41 says:

Myhill was to blame – he dropped the ball for the 1st and he could have come rushing out for the 2nd. The way he stayed on his line made it very simple for Iwelumo to score.

  • Ooty Tiger says:

He was fouled for the first goal and he wasn’t trying to catch, he was punching it, which he did, just not far enough. Second goal, why rush off your line when two defenders are tracking back, that’s a David James tactic!!!

Tough one, does his excellent shot stopping save more than his poor cross skills?

I would give Duke another go.

  • Dorset tiger says:

I think Myhill is grossly over-rated, just not good enough, but I don’t think Duke is good enough either, I think we need a new keeper!
