Following Hull City’s pre-season defeat to Aston Villa by 2 goals to nil, some fans would be thinking we are going to struggle this season. Following a poll run on Vital Hull, it seems the fans verdict couldn’t be more different.

We asked you ‘Was the Aston Villa performance encouraging?’ and the results are in.

74% of Vital Hull readers said that the performance signaled a drastic change in formation and style of play from what we watched only three months ago under Peter Taylor.

The team, although featuring vastly the same players that Peter Taylor had now had an attacking mentality rather than a defensive one. The players weren’t afraid to get stuck in and have a go at a team that they sat back off six months ago when we were knocked out of the F.A Cup with a whimper.

Phil Parkinson and Peter Taylor seem to be at different ends of the spectrum in playing styles and the new era is certainly more exciting and enjoyable to watch. With AS Nancy visiting the KC Stadium in two days time, a victory and another good performance should set the team up for the opening day at the Hawthornes.

26% of readers said the team did well, probably slightly nervous about the two defensive errors that cost the Tigers the game and the apparent lack of firepower the club has up-front.

Burgess looked out of his depth and with rumors of a move to Blackpool, it would be in the best interests of the player to make a move out on loan. City seem to be struggling in the goals department as we still lack a twenty goal a year striker – it looks like we will rely on the midfield again! If we are struggling in December, the money should be there in order to buy a replacement but until then it looks like the Tigers will have to make do with what we have.

Interestingly, not one reader said the performance was disappointing. Everyone said the performance was a vast improvement from last season’s efforts and if we can continue the form into the season, the Tigers should have a successful season. Providing we finish above 18th position, the season will be a success.

Before the AS Nancy game, we are testing our new competition to ‘Guess the team.’
