Bruce Aggravated After Stoke Draw

It seems everything was against Hull when we faced Stoke last weekend, apart from in fact our own effort and desire to win the game despite being down to ten men.

A sending off, a goal that wasn’t from a throw in that wasn’t, playing with ten men for 75 minutes – and we still should’ve taken all three points.

Clearly more positives than negatives, but the negatives are so frustrating as we could do little about them.

Speaking to the Official Site following the one all draw, manager Steve Bruce couldn’t really have been prouder of the efforts of the players on the day and yes even he admits a point is a very good return given we had reduced numbers, but the manner of their equalising goal was what really irked him.

‘We’ve got to be pleased with a point. When you go down to ten me after 14 minutes, of course you’d take a point. But to take the lead and then defend the way we did, we were magnificent. The disappointment and difficulty that I have with it is if Stoke score a legitimate goals through good play, then you accept it. But my players have come in with disappointment etched on their faces because they know that the throw in should’ve been ours.’

Absolutely everybody but the officials seemed to notice the second deflection, and even the actions of their player walking away disappointed indicated it wasn’t their decision and it just leaves Bruce perplexed and angered – and he’s probably not alone.

Of course it’s made worse for him as this is now the second dodgy decision we’ve had go against us following the Queens Park Rangers game.

Moving onto better things, he had no issues at all with the sending off of James Chester as it was a straight red, goalscoring opportunity and he was the last man but it would be very easy to argue it was harsh as it wasn’t malicious, and you could argue it wasn’t even a ‘professional foul’ as it was a genuine attempt at the ball, but given that happened, Bruce says how could he not take positives from the game.

‘The players were magnificent. We changed shape after the red and the players settled into it. The determination and will power to see it through was manful and we got a goal to hang on to. We made it so difficult for Stoke that in my opinion we deserved to hang on for all three points because Stoke didn’t really carve us open.’
