Crowds To Fall With Survival Battle?

The crowds of Hull City may be falling, but the team needs the fans if the club are to survive in the Championship.

The latest poll was suggested by Vital Hull member ernshaw who asked ‘If you thought crowds would decrease as we fight to stay in the CCC?’

Last season’s average crowd stood at 19,386 as City fans were given their first glimpse of Championship football for almost twenty years after back to back promotions from the basement division. However, after the successful first season, a second season that has seen many changes with the club struggling for survival has seen crowds decrease in size.

With the club having languished in the bottom half of the table almost all of the season, the crowds of Hull City have fallen to an average of 17,340. Where exactly are these fans going?

One problem, like many other clubs is the unreal expectations that fans hold. We all follow the same team and of course, we all want the club to do well but the expectations differ greatly from one person to the next. Having seen the managerial role at the club change, along with several playing staff, the expectations of a play-off push have proved to be some way off.

As many fans expectations can’t be met, on average, two thousand fans don’t want to watch the club anymore. After all, they’ve probably only been watching the team win games for the last two years.

A walk away from the ground after a defeat adds weight to these arguments. On many occasions, I have listened to people’s rants about the team, I even heard one man say how he was never coming back and was going to watch Hull KR instead. I’m sure he came back after the away win at Leicester City though.

Unfortunately, it won’t only be the team who suffer due to a lack of support, the club does aswell. The financial implications of two thousand less fans must make an impact in the club’s yearly figures. To combat this, Adam Pearson did reveal several months ago that season ticket prices for the new season would be at a reduced price, but would the fans still want to watch League 1 football?

Fortunately, there is still over half a season left. To believe we are relegated is foolish and we must continue to support the team. See you all at Norwich!

great article there matt….ignoring the natural ebb and flow of fans which to some degree will always happen…we have to support the team and therefore the club in always possible especially when their backs are against the wall like they are at present…..a fan is for life not just promotion !!!!

good article, seems there are to many fans in it for the winning of trophys and titles etc… although that would be nice a true fan knows it isnt going to happen every year (unless your likes of Man U and chelsea)…. I for one am proud and always will be proud to say I support the tigers, and everyone else should be
