Hull City will receive an extra £250,000 from the January transfer of Craig Fagan after he helped Derby County to promotion.

Craig Fagan was transferred from the Tigers to Derby County in January for an initial £750,000 with an extra quarter of a million depending on whether or not Derby County could achieve promotion.

At the time of the player’s sale, Fagan was regarded as the club’s best player after having a successful half season having been moved from a central striking role to a role playing wide on the right. Fagan had been rejuvenated by the arrival of former manager Phil Parkinson, but after his sacking in December, the player was sold in January.

Fagan’s contract was due to expire in the summer and the City chairman had the un-envious task of deciding whether to cash in on the player when they had the opportunity or to try to ensure Championship survival with Craig Fagan but risk not receiving any money for the out of contract player in the summer.

Pearson decided to cash in on the potential one million pound deal after Fagan had rejected three contract offers that would have made him the top earner at the club. In the end, the decision proved the right one as the Tigers managed to survive in the Championship without the aid of Craig Fagan.

Fagan will now be given the chance to prove himself in the Premiership after Stephen Pearson’s second-half goal earnt Derby a 1-0 victory over West Bromwich Albion.

Having lost the £60 million pound game, West Bromwich Albion will face another season in the Championship, but in the meantime, many Albion fans will be concerned about the prospect of losing such starts as Jason Koumas, Diomansy Kamara and Curtis Davies.
