Several names have been mentioned as options to join Mike Phelan’s coaching set up with Neil McDonald confirmed as the one he’s turned to.

McDonald was the boss at Blackpool last season but left them follow relegation with him returning to a coaching position with Hull, having held such roles with Bolton, Blackburn and West Ham.

After being confirmed as Phelan’s assistant head coach the 50-year-old told the official website.

‘I’m pleased to welcome Neil to the Club and look forward to working with him. It was important that we added to the backroom staff here and Neil brings a wealth of football experience which will be of huge importance as the season progresses.’

Phelan and McDonald will be the dugout with each other for the first time on Tuesday when Hull travel to Bristol City for the League Cup fourth round tie against the Championship side when City will hope for a winning start to end the losing run!
